Qigong (or Chi Kung, Chi Gung) is an ancient Chinese healing meditative technique which evolved over time with five distinct traditions of qigong, each with its own theories and characteristics: Chinese Medical Qigong, Daoist Qigong, Buddhist Qigong, Confucian Qigong, and Martial Qigong. Qi means air or breath, and in meditation is considered an essential source of life, while Gong means effort or practice that requires time. Qigong meditation involves movement exercises and the controlling of breath. Many different forms of Qigong meditation are practiced across the globe. While some of the techniques are vigorous and involve martial art exercises others are spiritual in nature and focus on breathing and meditation to promote mental health. Qigong meditative technique with regular practice can boost the overall health of an individual. The practice can lead to physical well being and mental harmony. Practitioners can feel the unity in mind, body, and spirit, experiencing happiness in life regardless of the circumstances. Today, the most common Qigong techniques include: Wai Dan or the external elixir. This technique involves concentration and physical movement. Nei Dan or internal elixir. This technique involves visualization (guided imagery) and sitting meditation. Qigong meditative technique can be divided based on the end objectives, like: Medical qigong: for self-healing and the healing others Spiritual qigong: for the enlightenment Martial qigong: for physical prowess
