Sivananda Yoga is a spiritual yoga system founded by Vishnudevananda; it includes the use of asanas but is not limited to them as in systems of yoga as exercise. Sivananda Yoga is different because here the asana is always balanced with pranayama and relaxation, offering indirect control of the mind. A healthy vegetarian diet supports the practice. Finally, meditation coupled with positive thinking work directly to master the mind. Sivananda Yoga is a school of hatha yoga that takes inspiration from the teachings of Swami Sivananda (1887-1963), brought to the West by his disciple Swami Vishnudevananda in the 1950s. Sivananda was a medical doctor before he became a Hindu monk, and both techniques are evident in the style of yoga he founded. It is dedicated to the teaching of classical yoga and vedanta to promote physical, mental and spiritual health. The teaching lineage of the Sivananda Yoga can be traced back many hundreds of years to the great sage Adi Sankaracharya (788-802 CE) who unified the diverse spiritual practices prevalent at the time into a cohesive system based on the Upanishads of the Four Vedas.
