Anusara School of Hatha Yoga, also known as Anusara Yoga is the successor of a modern school of hatha yoga founded by American-born yoga teacher John Friend in 1997. Anusara is based on the Tantra which means it focuses on intrinsic goodness and spiritual balance. This type of yoga targets alignment and heart openers. It also ties in aspects both spiritual and meditative. Anusara means flowing with grace - going with the flow - following your heart. Anusara emphasizes Universal Principles of Alignment as the focal point of its practice, which underlie all of the physical asanas. These principles are important in the practice of yoga as they give you guidelines on how to align your body, heart and mind in a way that provides both integration and safe opening so that circulation is optimal as well as strength, good health and wellbeing are fostered. In practicing Anusara Yoga, improvements may be exhibited in the following: flexibility, posture, lung capacity, immunity and circulation. Similar to Restorative Yoga, the psychological benefits include decreased stress and increased relaxation, as well as general improvements in one's mental stability and well-being.
